Reflections During Lent: The Cross and The Mosaic of People

Just a few days ago, we entered Lent. I’ve been listening to a daily reflection on Lent to refocus my attention on the Cross. The Cross puts things into perspective about what truly matters.

In this season and beyond, I want the Cross highlighted in my life.

This is why I wanted to make the Cross central in Hope Gave All. Initially, I had planned on releasing this last year. However, the timing worked out to coincide with Easter. Because of the nature of the process and the materials needed to make the different colors, sometimes certain colors of glass can be on back order for a while.

We learned more about the glassmaking process firsthand when we took our trip to Italy, where our Italian partners introduced us to a master glassmaker that makes the beautiful smalti glass used in our pieces.

We weren’t able to video or take pictures inside the actual crafting room, but we were able to talk with and watch the master glassmaker in action. We felt the heat from the ovens as it melted the glass into liquid and was poured into circles called “pizzas.” After the pizzas cooled, they are kept in the warehouse for later or moved into a room where workers used machines to cut the glass into thick chunks, what we know as smalti. It was incredible to see firsthand how and where our pieces start in each step of the process and meet the teams that make it happen. And it is a process that cannot be rushed.

Witnessing this process gave me even more appreciation of the value of each piece that makes up the greater piece of art.

I am grateful for the mosaic of people who make Mosaic People what it is.

In my next post, I’ll introduce and share about where these bright chunks of glass travel next to make our art.

Until then, I hope you find ways to reflect and place your Hope in the Cross.

With Love,

Sabrina
