Trail Mix Society

There is a songwriter I’ve followed for years that seems to put a sweet touch on everything she writes, even if it’s about something very mundane.

It got me thinking how lately, it feels like we have to dig around a little bit to find hope and the joy in things. But it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Then this is where I went in my mind…

We are in a trail mix society, where much of what is happening can be discouraging and negative and anxiety ridden. You know, like the the bags of trail mix that have more nuts than anything. Ha! But mixed in-between the raisins and nuts are the M&Ms and chocolate chips.

Go for those! Go ahead! Pick ‘em out! Dig as far as you need to into the bag to find them or even pour it all out into a bowl. Can you tell I’ve done this, much to my family’s dismay? :-)

Be the one that can find tenderness in a whole lot of hard.

Be the one that can find the sweetness in a whole lot of bitter.

Be the one that can say the kind thing when you really want to join the crowd and be rude and judgmental.

That’s where the satisfying sweetness is. And if you take a whole handful of mix and get a little bit of everything, enjoy it all. Let the sweetness flavor the whole mouthful!

Who doesn’t like the chocolate chips or the M&Ms in that mixed bag?

It really does make a difference, just like those specks of sweet goodness in a whole bag of blah.

Be a little sweetness in this trail mix society!
